Decking

Garden decking in South and West Wales

New garden decks and steps on a level timber frame, and repairs to decks with rotten boards, soft joists or slippery surfaces.

Joists sit on bearers, and the bearers sit on posts or pads set into the ground. On sloping ground the posts vary in height to keep the deck level, and joist spacing is set for the boards being used.

A weed membrane and gravel underneath stop growth coming up through the boards. Boards are laid with small gaps, and the ground below is shaped so rainwater drains away from the house walls.

Questions people ask

What does garden decking cost?

The price depends on the size, the height above the ground, the steps and how much the ground slopes. For repairs, it depends on whether the frame is sound.

Do I need planning permission for decking in Wales?

Usually not for a house, if the deck is no more than 30 cm above the ground and meets the other permitted development conditions. Higher platforms, and decks at listed buildings or flats, need permission.

How can I make my deck less slippery?

Algae on the surface is the usual cause. Cleaning it off at least once a year helps, and anti-slip strips or grooved boards help on steps and in shaded corners.

Can a deck be built over an old patio?

Often, yes. A low frame can sit on pads on top of the paving, provided rainwater can drain away underneath.
