Machine and driver together
Every hire comes with an operator, who brings the machine to site, runs it for the booked dates and takes it away at the end. Self-drive hire is not offered.
Machines and the jobs they suit
A mini digger suits back gardens, driveways and extension footings where access is narrow. A larger excavator handles bulk digs, deeper drainage and site clearance. A dumper with a driver moves spoil and materials around the site alongside the digger. Between them they cover the groundworks stages of a build: clearance, trenching, foundation digs and levelling.
Who directs the work
In UK operated hire the hirer usually runs the site and directs the operator, and the operator runs the machine. That split affects liability, so read the hire terms and check that your insurance covers hired-in plant with an operator.
What a quote depends on
The price depends on the site address, the access width at its narrowest point, the ground, the type and volume of work, the underground services and overhead lines you know about, and the dates.
